PETER
Peter has a unique combination of specialist knowledge and experiences in the finance and banking industry and is able to truly blend life cases with learning techniques to deliver effective integrated and interactive programmes. His areas of expertise are the depth and breadth of the Fixed-Income, Credit and Derivatives markets as these are the areas where he has direct practical experience with the prestigious banks, Central Banks, Sovereign Wealth Funds and also with consultancy clients.
Peter until very recently was a senior consultant at one of the new breed of fixed-income market broking firms. He was previously in senior roles at JP Morgan and at Bear Stearns where he was responsible for developing and selling Asset Backed and Derivatives products. He has worked in the financial markets for more than fifteen years and advises various institutions at the highest level on matters concerning the international capital markets. In 2011 he was called upon by the UK’s Royal Courts of Justice to act as an Expert Witness in complex financial cases.
Peter has trained courses in about twenty countries on topics including Swaps, Credit Products, Securitisation and Structured Products. He has designed and delivered on graduate programmes for Citibank, Deutsche Bank, Barclays Capital, RBS and Lloyds Banking Group. He is also a visiting lecturer at UCL on finance and risk related matters.
Peter is a dynamic and engaging trainer with a commanding presence. He is energetic and enthusiastic in the classroom and both challenges and stimulates the participants. Very practical and interactive approach, incorporating workshops, case-studies, spreadsheet calculations and live Bloomberg illustrations into all of his training programmes.
JUAN
Juan is a professional banking and finance trainer who for nearly eight years has been delivering interactive training in banking, finance, credit analysis, debt restructuring and loan workout, risk management, strategic management and corporate governance compliance.
In parallel to his lecturing career, Juan has a 19 year career in merchant and investment banking, initiated in the City of London. Since 2003 Juan has been the managing partner of an independent investment banking advisory firm specialising in finance raising, credit analysis and corporate finance services in the emerging economies of South Eastern Europe. A core element of Juan’s work through this firm is helping companies to restructure their debt and equity position with a view to strengthening company viability through their restructured Balance Sheets. It is this practical hands on experience of balance sheet restructuring that he brings to the courses and workshops that he develops for clients.
Following graduation from Business School in Economics and Finance in 1991, Juan joined the Government of Slovakia as an Economic and Political Adviser to the Slovak Prime Minister. Following his return to London he joined the Conservative Party where he established the party’s Eastern European office assisting a number of senior Eastern European Politicians in their parties’ political development
In 1993 Juan joined Hill Samuel Bank, the London based merchant bank in, covering International Project Finance and later became a credit analyst in Asset Based Finance, lending directly to international shipping companies. Juan briefly joined N M Rothschild in London as a member of the bank’s LBO credit team analysing clients and providing leveraged debt facilities to UK corporate, before joining Charterhouse Bank in 1997, where Juan began his Corporate Finance career.
In late 1999 Juan joined EBRD where he served as a Principal Banker in the bank’s office in Romania. In this role Juan led teams of credit analysts in identifying and completing a significant number of credit facilities for Romanian and international companies.
GERALD
Gerald is a leading thinker, consultant and trainer on business risk and decision making. He has conducted training courses across the globe for some ten years. These have included topics as diverse as Market Psychology, Foreign Exchange, Currency Options, Scenario Planning and Strategic Decision Making. Clients have included major international banks, central banks, multi-national corporates and governments. He has trained board level executives, fund managers, traders, senior civil servants and business executives. He is also a well-known speaker on the benefits and applications of behavioural economics in business decision-making and risk taking; and is a regular columnist in the financial press. He recently presented at Nudgestock – a leading event organised by Ogilvy & Mather.
Gerald has over 30 years of financial market experience, working for banks in London, Hong Kong and Switzerland. His market background is in Foreign Exchange, Currency Options, Money Markets and Bullion Trading. He has run proprietary trading teams, options trading books and headed a major bullion trading operation. He retains close links with the markets as the special advisor to the board of a hedge fund in Germany. Gerald’s main business expertise is in Behavioural Risk, Change and Decision Making. Much of his work is now on collaborative research in these fields, in particular looking at trader and investor biases and behaviour. He has close links with a number of academic institutions in behavioural and neuro-science research.
He is a Visiting Fellow at Newcastle Business School and a frequent television and radio broadcaster on risk, decision making and financial market commentaries (BBC World Service, Sky News, ARISE TV)
GARRY
Garry has 28 years’ experience as a practitioner, consultant and adviser in the private equity and venture capital markets, and has provided training in the industry since 1990. He joined independent venture capital company Baronsmead in 1985, becoming a director and shareholder after helping to arrange Baronsmead’s own Management Buy Out in 1989. During the early 1990’s the company grew to become one of the UK’s largest independent private equity firms and was acquired by fund manager Ivory & Sime in 1996.
Shortly thereafter Garry left to co-found Independent Direction, a specialist consultancy focusing on human capital in the private equity industry. He sold Independent Direction in 2005 to concentrate on training and writing, although continues to work in an advisory capacity in private equity. He is an independent director of a bank owned private equity fund manager in Mauritius and non-executive director of a privately owned UK recruitment company.
Garry’s main activity is training and skill development in emerging markets private equity, especially in Africa and the MENA region. He has a particular interest in the development of indigenous capacity in Sub Saharan private equity. He has delivered private equity and related courses in Western and Eastern Europe, Dubai, Bahrain, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Zambia, Nigeria and Tanzania. He has also had 7 books published on the topics of private equity, management buy outs and mergers and acquisitions.
SIMON
Simon has over 15 year’s experience as a professional corporate banker, during which period he has held a number of senior positions with major financial institutions. His principal responsibilities have included:
- Credit / risk analysis and management
- Credit policy formulation
- Business development
- Relationship management
- Corporate recoveries
During his 16 years working full time as a professional training consultant he has covered the full range of Corporate Banking issues including: credit analysis (both corporate and banks), cash flow analysis, modelling, documentation and legal issues, problem loan management, corporate funding, corporate strategy, fundamentals of corporate finance, and understanding accounts and accounting issues.
In addition to delivering professional training programmes, Simon has also been involved with several academic institutions and is currently an external assessor on Cardiff University MBA Programme.
PAUL
Paul is an Applied Learning associate member who specializes in investment management, wealth management, equity valuation and hedge funds.
Paul started his Investment Management career at Royal Insurance in 1983. Following successful completion of the Society of Investment Analysts Associateship, Paul joined the small team managing Royal’s in-house long term UK Equity portfolios. In 1990, following the lifting of exchange controls in Stockholm, he joined the Swedish insurer Trygg-Hansa’s London start-up operation to manage its UK Equity exposure.
In 1994 Paul moved into the Private Client arena, as part of the Investment Unit of Lloyds Private Banking & over a two year period diversified away from an exclusive analytical/Fund Management role to incorporate an extensive presentational package on the Bank’s investment strategy delivered ‘on the road’ to its network of offices around the country.
In 1996 Paul took the opportunity offered by the Bermuda-domiciled Bank of Butterfield to head up the global Equity research effort in London in support of the Bank’s (offshore) private client base.
While his freelance financial training commitments grew, Paul had a spell with an international high-risk security company analysing the operations of quoted oil & mining corporates worldwide. In 2000 Paul moved into full time training with DC Gardner, the in-house tailored training arm of Euromoney Institutional Investor, specialising in Fund Management, Equity Markets, Private Banking & Hedge Funds.
Finally, in 2004 he set up his own company, structured to work with existing training providers in the market place. He is a member of CFA Institute.
KEVIN
Kevin is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (CISI), skilled in private client business including investment management, IT development, project management and training strategy, following a career as a senior manager within a large global bank.
His key areas of experience have included private client investment management, investment administration and dealing, settlement and custody. He also has a high degree of specialist knowledge in areas such as financial planning, estate and tax planning, probates, trusts and managing unquoted assets such as property, land and business assets.
Kevin is an Applied Learning associate specialising in custom made solutions to clients learning and development needs. A confident and enthusiastic trainer his experience allows him to tailor his presentations to the needs of a diverse range of audiences having presented throughout Europe, the Middle East and Far East.
His clients include many of the leading companies in London’s financial markets for whom he provides training on specialised investment subjects tailored to the needs of individual clients and audiences. He also teaches towards the CISI post graduate Diploma in Investment Operations as well as Wealth Management, Investment Management and investment administration exams.
He also undertakes training worldwide and particularly in the Middle East where he trains on a range of investment examinations including International Investment Management, International Wealth Management and International Securities and Investments.
He is a fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment and sits on a number of syllabus groups as well as being a member of the Exam Board. He works with the Institute in the expansion of their qualifications by undertaking training of tutors for the Institute’s international exams throughout Europe, the Middle East and the Far East.
